KHAR Gymkhana ‘A’ and Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana (JVPG)
‘A’ won close matches to enter the semifinals of the RS.50,000/- prize
money The Leela-ISP Squash Classic (Handicap Team Event) Tournament here
on Sunday.
Both teams were stretched to the fifth and deciding
singles game. JVPG ‘A’ were up against Club Aquaria ‘B’ and they got off
to a fine start. Uday Mehra needed three games to dispose of Gautam Shetty
11-7, 9-11, 11-9 and Vivek Khanna wasted little time in getting past
Mahesh Mangaonkar 11-7, 11-7, Sanjay Kolati and Ashish Mehta were looking
to wrap things up for JVPG but things didn’t go their way. They suffered a
8-11, 11-5, 11-2 defeat at the hands of Gautam Shetty and Mahesh
Mangaonkar, despite having won the first game 11-8. Ravi Patil then won a
tough three-game encounter against Kalpesh Mehta to tie the score at 2-2.
The deciding match of the tie was between Ashish
Mehta (JVPG) and Manish Chauhan (Club Aquaria). Knowing what was required
of him, Ashish concentrated on the match and won comfortably at 12-10,
13-3. JVPG ‘A’ will now meet Juhu Millennium in the semi—finals. In the
quarter Juhu Millennium swept away Club Aquaria ‘A’ 3-0.

Ashok Nagpal was the hero for Khar Gymkhana ‘A’ on
the first day of the Rs. 50,000 prize money The Leela-ISP Squash Classic
Tournament (handicap team event) yesterday.
HE won his first singles against Chembur Gymkhana’s
Uday, 15-4, to give his side a vital 4-0 lead. Nagpal then beat Niraj
Kakkad by the same margin to revive the fortunes of his team against JVPG
‘A’ Khar Gymkhana ‘A’ mean while, won the tie against Chembur Gymkhana 6-2
and drew with JVPG ‘A’ 4-4 at the Leela Kempinski glass back squash
courts.
Apart from Nagpal, veteran Ashish Gupta won his
singles to win two points for Khar Gymkhana ‘A’ to give the team a 4-0
lead over Chembur Gymkhana However, Chembur Gymkhana’s Punit Wig pulled
one back defeating Aditya Shastri 15-14 to reduce the lead to 2-4. But in
the doubles, Gupta, pairing with Mahesh Chandani, beat Sandeep and Anjum
Shaikh15-11 to win the tie 6-2. Teams from ISP and The Leela also
recorded easy victories in their first round matches yesterday.

the quarterfinal stage, after they defeated Palm Court 6-2 in the round
robin league final round matches of the Rs. 50,000/- prize money Leela-ISP
squash classic (handicap team event) tournament in Sunday.
JVPG ‘A’ players were run close in all their games.
Kalpesh Mehta was beaten 13-15 by Amit Kataria, after Ashish Mehta beat
Afraz Masters 15-10. they claimed the third singles and doubles to win the
tie 6-2.
NMSA Trounce The Leela ‘B’ 6-2 (Article in Asian Age, Mumbai : 2/8/2006)
Mumbai, Aug. 1: The veteran Squash players of Navi
Mumbai Sports association (NMSA) dominated the younger and fitter players
of The Leela ‘B’ to emerge 6-2 winners in the round robin league matches
of the Rs. 50,000 prize money The Leela-ISP Squash Classic (Handicap Team
Event) Tournament, which was played at The Leela Kempinski glass back
Squash Courts, here at the weekend.
NMSA were lead by Leon Emmanuel in a team, that
consists of players who are in their forties. The players for NMSA mainly
play doubles, but used their experience to overcome their younger and
fitter opponents even in two singles matches.

Teams Up (Article in Times Of India 10/7/2006
Khar Gymkhana’s A and B teams won their matches by
identical 6-2 margins in The Leela Squash Classic a handicap team event
designed by Indian Squash Professionals, which commenced at The Leela’s
glass-back courts at Sahar from Sunday. There are 16 teams which will play
a league on Sundays till August 13. Khar, Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana and
Club Aquaria, have entered two teams each in this the ISP’s 71st event.
