Talented youngster Mahesh Mangaonkar, the under-15 British Open and German
Open Champion wore down the early resistance from former National champion,
Manish Chotrani, to emerge the men's singles champion in the Rs 90,000 prize
money The Club Squash Championships, 2009, organized by the Indian Squash
Professional, at the squash courts of the Club, Andheri late on Saturday.
In a battle between youth and experience, the 15-year-old Mangaonkar, the
better player on the day, won the first game 11-7, but lost the close second
10-11 to his 38-year-old rival before romping home in the next two 11-6,
11-7 to bag the winner's purse of Rs 12,000. Chotrani, who has to be
credited for still being a force among the leading squash players in city,
was not in the best of form and had to be content with the runners-up purse
of Rs. 6000.
The handicap doubles final saw Rohan Gracious and Bipin Batra record a
comfortable 15-10, 13-15, 15-10 win over Amitpal Kohli and Anil Mohite to
take home Rs 12,000.
The Chief Guest
of the evening was Dinesh Khanna (Director, The Club) and Anil Kapoor (MD,
Western Union Money Transfer), who give away the Prize Money and
trophies to all the winners and runner-ups.
