Otters Club to meet The Leela in final

The top two fancied teams, Otters Club and The Leela, will contest the final of the first suburban handicap squash tournament co-sponsored by Kanakia Construction and The Leela.

In the semi finals, Otters crushed Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana by four matches to one. The Leela edged out Sea Rock by three matches to two. Their professional, Chandrakant Pawar, came back from the verge of defeat to beat A. Merchant in the opening tie. E. Dastur and Vinit Chauhan clinched The Leela’s win after Brian Sopher lost to junior Kukreja.

The final will be played on September 4.

 

Narrow win for Otters

Otters Club won a hard-fought encounter against The Leela by three matches to one in the last league tie of the first suburban handicap squash tournament co-sponsored by Kanakia Construction and The Leela. Four of the five matches went the full distance.

Hoshi Sarkari and Eric Dastur won their matches for The Leela and the six games they won enable. The Leela to top the table with 76 points two more than Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana. Each game won counts for one point. Otter’s with 72 were third and Sea Rock fourth with 65. The top four play the semi finals next Sunday. The Leela meet Sea Rock and Juhu Play Otters.

 

Sopher, Pawar stretched

Hard-earned victories by Brian Sopher and Chandrakant Pawar featured the Leela’s 4-1 win over Holiday Inn in the second round matches of the inaugural Rs.25,000 suburban handicap squash tournament co-sponsored by Kanakia Construction and The Leela.

Sopher wore down Ashish Mehra in five games and Pawar beat R. Sonpal over extra points in the deciding fifth game.

The other matches saw Juhu Centaur beat Andheri Recreation Club 5-0 and Otters rout Juhu Gymkhana 5-0. Favourites Otters had lost to Sea Rock in the first round. Sea Rock had a bye in the second round.

The Leela lead the table with 28 points followed by Otters (20), Juhu Gym (19), Holiday Inn (16), Juhu Centaur (15), Andheri (12), and Sea Rock (9).

Sea Rock, who had shocked Otters Club in the opening round, downed The Leela by four matches to one in the First suburban handicap squash tournament co-sponsored by Kanakia Construction ad The Leela on Sunday.

The Leela still hold the lead with 64 points. In striking distance are otters and Juhu Gymkhana with 60 points each, while Sea Rock have jumped to fourth place with 57 points.

The once to clinched Sea Rock’s win were A. Kukerja who beat Brian Sopher, A. Merchant who beat Chandrakant Pawar and C. Pereira who downed Eric Dastur in five grueling sets.

Despite losing to Juhu Gymkhana 2-3, The Leela, with 40 points, led the table after the third round of  matches in the seven team inaugural handicap squash tournament co-sponsored by Kanakia Construction and The Leela.

In the other matches, Centaur beat Sea Rock 3-2, while Holiday Inn thrashed Andheri Recreation Club Junior Parth Doshi gave them a flying start beating D. Shetty in five keen sets.

THE LEELA, with 28 points, leads the tally after the second round in the Suburban Handicap Squash Tournament, co-sponsored by Kanakia Builders  and The Leela . In second round matches played at The Leela court on Sunday. The Leela defeated Holiday Inn 4-1, with most of the matches getting stretched the full distance. Leading professional Chandrakant Pawar of The Leela had a fight on his hands before getting the better of R.Sonpal 8-15, 15-17, 15-13, 15-13, 17-14.

In second position is Otters Club with 20 points, followed by Juhu Gymkhana (19), Holiday Inn (6), Juhu Centaur (15), and Andheri Recreation (12).

In their second round match, Juhu Gymkhana 5-0.

 

Sea Rock upset Otters

SEA ROCK caused an upset in the inaugural suburban team handicap squash tournament  co-sponsored by Kanakia Builders and The Leela, when they beat Otters Club 3-0.

Kukreja beat Cyrus Poncha 11-15, 15-13, 15-10, 10-15, 15-11.

The other victories were recorded by B. Carl, who beat Rustom Dalal 15-6, 17-15, 13-15, 15-14 and Clint Pereira, who downed Avinash Bhavnani 15-12, 13-15, 15-14 and 15-8.

In the other matches, Juhu Gymkhana won a close match against Holiday Inn 3-2, while the The Leela beat Andheri Recreation Club 4-1.

 

Poncha propels Otters into second spot

Cyrus Poncha led Otters Club to a 5-0 victory Centaur on Sunday to propel the winners into Holiday Inn (both have 49 points) in the Suburban Squash Handicap Tournament at the The Leela Hotel.

Poncha dropped a game to Sanjay Goyal before prevailing 15-12, 15-13, 7-15, 15-12.

The Leela lead the league with 54 points.

In the other matches, Sea Rock beat Holiday Inn 3-1 and Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana defeated Andheri Recreation Club 5-0.

 

The Leela stay ahead

The Leela maintained their lead when they beat Juhu Centaur, 4-1, in the suburban handicap squash league yesterday.

Leela now have 54 points, Holiday Inn are in second position with 37 despite a 1-4 loss to Otters Club who are third with 34.

They are followed by Sea Rock (33 points), Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana (31), Centaur (30) and Andheri Recreation Club (24).
