Pawar –Goyal lift Club Prana title
(Article in Free Press Journal, Mumbai : 24/02/2004)

FORMER nine-time professionals national champion Chandrakant Pawar provided magical glimpse of yore, when he and partner Sanjay Goyal, representing Indian Squash Professionals, staved off a spirited challenge from the younger Otters Club duo of Avinash Bhavnani and Santosh More to win the title in the Club Prana Spa and ISP Doubles Squash Championship at the air-conditioned glass-backed courts of the Hyatt Regency, here on Sunday.

Pawar and Goyal were taken the distance by Bhavnani and more before winning 15-13, 13-15, 15-11, 6-15, 17-16 and gaining for themselves an attractive free stay package in the hotel. Though Pawar’s legs seemed to be feeling him in the latter stages of the match, he hung on tenaciously, spurred on by partner Goyal and his delicate touch saw him win crucial points for the team when the scores were neck to neck in the decider.

In the semi-finals, while Pawar and Goyal got the better of WCG’s Rajesh Sonavane and Jay Thapa 15-8, 15-11, 16-17, 7-15, 15-13, Bhavnani and More beat the Hyatt Regency’s Brian Sopher and Riaz Mohammed 15-9, 15-14, 15-9.
