Khar Gym clinch squash title

The overall superiority of Khar Gymkhana saw them defeat Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana 4-1 in the all-Mumbai team final of the third Jindal Handicap squash tournament, co-sponsored by Paper Bags Pvt. Ltd, at the Jindal Recreation Centre, Vashind, according to information received here on Tuesday.

After Karan Malhotra and Saket Wali had given Khar Gymkhana a 2-0 lead with victories over Jay Thapa and Rohan Gracious, Willingdon pulled one back through Rakshak Malhotra. 

Malhotra got the better of Shiv Malhotra in three games, winning 15-6, 14-17, 15-6.  The tie could have gone the other way had Mohit Gaba won a thriller for Khar Gym in the fourth runner.

Gaba beat Avinash Bhatija 14-15, 15-14, 15-14 in a 40-minute thriller to knock the stuffing out of Willingdon. In the fifth rubber, which was of academic interest Amitpal Kohli beat Rajesh Sonawane 17-15, 15-13, to extend Khar Gymkahana’s lead.

The winners won Rs 6,000, while the runners-up had to be content with Rs 4,000. In the match to decide the third and fourth places, Otters Club beat Nashik Club 3-2.

 

Khar Gymkhana, The Leela score

Khar Gymkhana and the Leela Mumbai both registered hard-fought victories in the round-robin league matches of the team event of the Paper Bags Pvt Ltd. Sponsored 3rd Jindal Handicap Squash Tournament at the Jindal Recreation centre, Vasind on Saturday, according to information received here. 

Khar Gymkhana were taken the full distance before they prevailed over Otters Club 3-2. 

The Leela Hotel scored and Identical 3-2 margin of win against Jindal ‘B’. 

Amit Pal Kohli gave Khar Gymkhana the lead, with a 2-1 win over Vijay Sonawane, but Sanjay Pawar leveled scores with a 2-1 victory over Saket Wali. After Mohit Gabba and Shiv Malhotra won their matches to make it 2-2, it was Bipin Batra who turned out to be the match winner for Khar Gymkhana, defeating Karan Malhotra 3-2 for the match. 

For the Leela, after experienced campaigners, Yakub Shaikh and Chandrakant Pawar lost their match to be down 0-2, it was Mahendra Agarwal, Manoj Yadav and Ashish Agarwal who secured victory for the hotel team.

Khar Gymkhana set up a final clash with Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana in the third Jindal Handicap Squash Tournament, co-sponsored by Paper Bags India Pvt. Ltd., at the Jindal Recreation Center, Vasind according to information received here.  While Willingdon beat Otters Club 3-2, Khar Gym outplayed Nashik Club 4-1. 

Willingdon’s victory was credited to Rohan Gracious, who won the decider after the two teams were locked 2-2.  Gracious beat Vijay Sonawane 12-15, 15-7, 15-13 ends the tie in Willingdon’s favour. 

In the other match, Khar Gym proved too strong for the team from Nashik, with Anil Verma, Saket Wali, Shiv Malhotra, Karan Malhotra and Amit pal Kohli all winning their encounters.
