The Leela President’s Squash Cup

The Leela Beach Goa is organizing the inaugural tournament at The Fitness and Racquet Centre. The Leela, Bombay on April 23rd Sunday.

The tournament is open to Presidents, Chairmen and Managing Directors of companies in Bombay. The tournament has received a good response and some of the players who have confirm their entries are as follows with their seedings.

Prakash Chauhan of Parle Products (seeded third); Nirmal Bhogilal of Batliboy & Co., Arif Patel Roadways (seeded second); Vikas Oberoi of Oberoi Builders; Gulu Mirchandani of Onida; Vaman Apte of Apte Amalgamations Ltd.; S S Shirgaokar of Ugar Sugar Works (seeded fourth); Manan Shah of Arihant Agro Products;

The game will be played on American points. Trophies will be distributed to the winner and runner-up of the tournament.

 

Apte top seeded

Vaman Apte, of  Apte Amalgamations Ltd is the top seed for The Leela President’s Cup squash tournament at The Leela’s glass back courts on Sunday.

Apte was ranked in India’s top five in the 80’s. The second seed is Arif  Patel of Patel Roadways who was a swimming champion and later India’s second ranked junior .

The tournament is restricted to chairmen, directors and chief executives of companies. Mr. Vivek Nair, chairman and managing director of The Leela, said that the involvement of the top brass should have a catalytic effect and help promote sports in their companies. He said The Leela had promoted a variety of sport in the past and would be staging the ATP challenger again in October November in Goa.

Two major corporate sporting events organised by The Leela Group take place on April 23 and May 7 respectively.

On April 23 is The Leela President’s Squash Cup, open to presidents, chairmen and Managing Directors of companies in Bombay.

It is the inaugural event, but the organisers felt that it will have a permanent place on the city’s sports calendar.

The Leela Golf Invitation Tournament on May 7 is in its second year, the inaugural event last year being an unqualified success.

The intention behind bringing together the captions of industry in sports competitions is  to get them interested in sponsoring sports event and promoting sportsmen.

 

Squash tourney for

The captains of industry have been provided with another avenue for their on eupmanship the squash courts.  The Leela Kempinski will conduct on April 23,  the President’s Cup squash tournament at their glass back courts.

The event is restricted to the creme de la creme of industry----presidents, chief executives, chairman and directors of companies. The matches of this one day event will be on American scoring pattern to be played over best of three sets. Matches will start at 10a.m. and end around 4 p.m. There are attractive prizes for the winners.

Arif Patel Triumphs

Arif Patel, of Patel Roadways, defeated Vaman Apte, of Apte Amalgamations to win The Leela President’s cup squash tournament at the hotel’s glass-back courts on Sunday.

This inaugural tournament was for directors, chairman and chief executives of companies. Twenty-two year-old Patel, a former India No.2, junior, picked up everything but still had a fight on his hands as the older Apte played superb strokes and volleyed well from midcourt, Apte won the first game and it was 12-all in the second when he missed a volley drop to let the initiative sip away. Patel began keeping Apte to the back of the court with some good cross courts and side-wall shots and a few judicious jobs off the side-wall and walked away with the last two games to win at 3-15, 15-12, 15-9, 15-8.

 

In the semi-finals, Apte beat Shishir Shirgaokar of Ugar Sugar Mills 15-9, 15-10 while Patel got past Ajay Bhandare 15-7, 15-8.

Squash, golf tourneys

With a view to rekindling the love of sport in the top echelons of the corporate world, the Leela will be organizing a golf and squash tournament for Presidents, chairman and managing directors of companies in Bombay.

It will be the second edition of The Leela Golf Cup Invitation Tournament, while the Leela president’s squash cup is the new addition.

Addressing a press conference at The Leela on Friday, the hotel’s Managing Director, Mr. Vivek Nair said that the heydays, to return to the squash courts and golfing greens. This, he said, would make them more inclined towards sponsoring further events, which would help in promoting the sports.

The one-day golf tournament will be held at the Bombay Presidency Golf Course on May 7, while the one-day squash event will be held at The Leela’s glass-backed court on Sunday, April 23.

Among the 22 entries received for squash are names like top seed  Vaman Apte of Apte Amalgamations, second seed Arif Patel of Patel Roadways, third seed Prakash Chauhan of Parle Products, fourth seed S S Shirgaokar of Ugar Sugar Works, Manan Shah of Arihant Agro Products and Harry Singh
